 A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL, BRYAN NIXON

What a delight it is to take a moment each year to not only share our Annual Report, but more importantly to thank all those who contribute in so many ways to our school!

The 2015 – 2016 academic year witnessed the school reaching capacity enrollment, the achievement of being successfully reaccredited by the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) for another ten-year period, the opening of our new Athletics Center and the completion of our Reimagining Ready Capital Campaign. In addition to all these ‘landmark’ events, Whitby continued to inspire a passion for learning and empower each child to take responsibility as an open-minded, principled citizen in a global community.

This ability to focus on the present, as well as the aspirational, is a key feature that differentiates our vibrant community of learners.  We are incredibly grateful to each Whitby family for choosing our school as the right environment to inspire and challenge their child’s learning. We are also inspired by those families who fuel our aspirations and vision with their philanthropic giving. In a sense, tuition funds our mission and philanthropy fuels our vision.’ The annual charitable gift that you willingly give continues to be a vital component for us to live our mission and to continue to achieve our vision for the school.

Each contribution to our community, whether it is through the time you commit to being a partner with us in your child’s learning or through your generosity in philanthropic giving, is gratefully received. Above all, I am grateful for the opportunity you provide my colleagues and I with each day – the opportunity to spend time with your children and to share in their joy of learning.

LEADERSHIP

 A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR, PATRICIA FRANKLIN

Sharing a passion for learning with my twin daughters, Carolina ‘18 and Victoria ‘18 throughout the Whitby educational continuum has been a joy and blessing for our family. I am continually excited by the opportunities for learning provided by their teachers and peers.  My husband, Alan, and I are thrilled each evening to play our part in their journey as they share their thoughts, ideas, opinions and perspectives on the many concepts they are exploring at Whitby.  Their ability to 'own' and be responsible for their learning journey was the inspiration that led me to serve the Whitby community as the Board Chair for the past five years.

The 2015 - 2016 school year provided further validation for the quality of our program and the ownership our children have for their learning.  The year concluded with the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) successfully granting Whitby re-accreditation for the next 10 years. In addition to our accreditation from the American Montessori Society and the International Baccalaureate, the CAIS visiting team commended Whitby for:

•    Our exemplary educational program;

•    Our faculty and staff for their commitment to our mission that embraces a culture of continuous improvement;

•    Our school for its commitment to maintaining the highest standards possible;

•    And, above all, our students for being active co-creators of their academic experience, positive participants in their own education, and joyful ambassadors of their school and its program.

Our Annual Report provides Whitby’s Board of Trustees and Leadership the opportunity to not only share our passion for learning, but also to say thank you to all those who support Whitby in so many ways, not least through your giving. As a joyful ambassador, I want to thank each family who contributes to our mission and shows their appreciation for their child's learning journey through their gifts of time, talent and treasure.

We are thankful for your support and grateful for your contributions. Your generosity fuels our school's vision for the future and your involvement in your child's learning will provide a lasting legacy that will help them flourish in the years to come.

"As the school year begins, I've been reflecting on the beginning of my 30th year at Whitby. I feel such a sense of pride as to what an amazing place Whitby is. For me it's so professionally fulfilling to see the vibrant energy and the quality of our faculty and staff in that room, and the direction that our school is heading."

It really struck me how much momentum our Whitby community has gained and how much we have accomplished. I'm most proud of what a high quality education we are able to provide our children, and I am so grateful to be a part of this exceptional community.

GIVING AND VOLUNTEERISM

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Whitby's Board of Trustees support the school in ensuring that the school is mission-appropriate, relevant and vital to Whitby Students and families.

We thank the members of our Board for their ongoing support of Whitby's mission and strategic vision for the future.

ANNUAL FUND DONORS

The Annual Fund fuels innovation and positively impacts teaching and learning across all grade levels. You might consider the funds Whitby raises each year to be venture capital.

Like any growing business, Whitby invests that capital in growth. Thank you to all of our community who gave to the 2015/16 Fund.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN DONORS

Reimagining Ready: The Campaign for Whitby came to a close in June 2016 and was the most historic campaign effort in Whitby's 58 years.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised $6.1 million over the course of three years to fund a four classroom addition and double the size of our Athletics Center.

VOLUNTEERISM AT WHITBY

Parent participation in any form is invaluable in helping further enrich our students' educational experience.

Thank you to all of our 2015/16 volunteers for their support across many areas of the school.
